Whoever Robert X. Cringely really is, he's started channeling Harlan
Ellison. Of course Ellison got to this point years before Cringe.
"With the Internet, the greatest disseminator of bad data and bad
information the universe has ever known, it's become impossible to trust any
news from any source at all, because it's filtered through this crazy
yenta gossip line.
It's impossible to know anything." -- Harlan Ellison, September 17, 1998.
My response to Cringely is the same as my response to Ellison. How is this
different from newspapers? The only difference is that on the net you get to
see it happening Bigger and badder.
I mean, really, how many people out there don't know about at least
one important story that's never made it to the mass media, or didn't make
it in timely fashion? And these are often not little things like people
losing email access for a few days, they have people's lives on the line.
People have already forgotten about the media rallying behind George Bush
and his non-existent Weapons of Mass Distraction?
Ah, the hell with it, go back and read my 8 year old article. It's still true.
